2019 Cannes winner 'Parasite' has appeared strong in the home market, enjoying a winning start at South Korea's box office.
According to data from Kobiz, the tracking service of the Korean Film Council, Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy feasted on South Korea's box office in its opening day following the impressive Cannes win, taking over 3.9 million dollars.
The first Korean film ever to scoop the top prize in Cannes, topped all comers and holdovers from the US market such as 'Aladdin' and 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters'.
The director of the flick who touched down to a hero’s welcome in Seoul received the news that the film was off to a flying start beforehand as ticket pre-sales data confirmed.
Another media report quoted North American seller Neon as saying that the flick is set to be released October 11 in Los Angeles and New York.
